Mr Sultan

Mr Javed Sultan is a highly experienced consultant surgeon specialising in oesophagogastric cancer and weight loss surgery. He began his consulting career in 2014 at Guildford, where he played a key role in expanding and developing the regional oesophagogastric cancer unit for Surrey. Before his appointment at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, he served as a consultant surgeon at the prestigious Northern Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit in Newcastle upon Tyne, renowned internationally for its expertise. With extensive training in all aspects of weight loss surgery, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric band surgery, Mr Sultan is dedicated to delivering high-quality care with a patient-centred approach. He is known for his reliability, approachability, dedication, conscientiousness, and trustworthiness, and is committed to providing the best possible care for his patients. Mr Sultan completed his medical training in Newcastle upon Tyne, graduating with an MBBS degree in 2001. He then embarked on two years of research focused on oesophageal and stomach cancer, earning a Doctorate of Medicine degree with commendation and being nominated for the Medical Sciences Doctoral Thesis Prize. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was awarded the Association of Surgeons Gold Medal and Prize as the top candidate in the UK at the Intercollegiate Examination in Surgery (FRCS). During his training, Mr Sultan spent 27 months as a senior trainee at the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he received comprehensive training under the guidance of Professor SM Griffin OBE, a leading expert in the field. This experience allowed him to develop exceptional skills in the management of oesophagogastric cancers. For five years, Mr Sultan served as a Consultant Oesophago-Gastric and Laparoscopic Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, where he provided specialized oesophagogastric cancer services and received complex tertiary referrals from other hospitals across the UK. Additionally, he performed weight loss surgery at St George’s Hospital. In June 2018, he moved to the Salford Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester, attracted by the opportunity to continue his passion for oesophagogastric cancer and weight loss surgery. Salford Royal Hospital is now the largest oesophagogastric centre in the UK, serving a population of 3.2 million. Mr Sultan is focused on further developing enhanced recovery, prehabilitation, and weight loss surgery in his new role. Mr Sultan has excellent expertise in bariatric surgery, having received training from Mr P Small at the Sunderland Royal Hospital. He further expanded his knowledge by spending time with Professor JD Luketich at the University Of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he learned the technique of Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (MIO), an area of keen interest for him in the future. Throughout his career, Mr Sultan has been recognised with seven prizes for his contributions to the field of surgery. He has also presented his research at national and international conferences, showcasing his dedication to advancing medical knowledge.
