The Orbera-365 and Allurion gastric balloons are both non-surgical, minimally invasive devices designed to aid in weight loss.
The Orbera-365 gastric balloon is a silicone balloon filled with a saline solution that is placed in the stomach endoscopically. It is intended to remain in the stomach for up to 12 months, hence the name “365.” During this period, it takes up space in the stomach, which helps individuals feel fuller and consume smaller portions of food. The balloon is typically combined with a comprehensive weight loss program, including diet and exercise counselling.
The Allurion gastric balloon is another type of intragastric balloon system. It is also made of a soft silicone material and filled with a saline solution. The Allurion balloon is designed to be swallowed in the form of a capsule, without the need for an endoscopic procedure. Once the capsule reaches the stomach, it is inflated with the saline solution via a thin catheter. The balloon is designed to remain in the stomach for approximately four months and is also used in conjunction with a personalised weight loss program. A benefit of the Allurion is that after 4 months the balloon dissolves, meaning no need to return for a removal appointment.
